You've seen it — a plant on the counter, a vague claim about “eco-friendly products,” a recycling bin tucked in the corner. At craft + theory, sustainability isn't a marketing line. It's a set of real, specific choices — some visible, some behind the scenes — that shape how we work with every guest, every day.
Sustainability here isn't a department or a campaign. It's just how the place runs.
we recycle 95% of our salon waste — and we mean it
Most people don't think about what a salon throws away. Hair clippings. Foil. Empty color tubes. Chemical rinse water. Plastics. It adds up fast, and almost all of it goes straight to landfill at the average salon.
We're a proud partner of Green Circle Salons, a certified recycling program built specifically for the beauty industry. Through that partnership, we divert and recycle 95% of our salon waste — including materials that standard municipal recycling won't touch, like color chemicals and metallic foils.
It's not a simple process, and it isn't free. But it's one of the commitments we made when we opened, and it hasn't changed.
the products we use are certified sustainable — not just “clean”
We use Davines as our primary product line, and there's a reason for that beyond how the products perform (though they do perform exceptionally well).
Davines is a certified B Corporation — meaning they've met rigorous standards for environmental and social responsibility across their entire business, from ingredient sourcing to packaging to how they treat their employees. The NaturalTech line we use for treatments is built around sustainably sourced ingredients and minimal environmental footprint.
When your artist recommends a Davines treatment or sends you home with a product, you're not just getting results — you're using something made by a company that's held itself accountable to independent standards, not just its own marketing.
we know exactly how much color goes into every service
One of the less obvious ways salons generate waste is color. Mix too much, and the excess gets discarded — along with the packaging, the chemical disposal, and the cost. Most salons eyeball it.
We use Vish, a color weighing system that measures exactly how much product each service requires. Every formula is tracked. Artists mix precisely what's needed, nothing more. Over time, the data tells us what each service actually uses — so waste shrinks and precision improves.
It's one of those operational choices that most guests never see, but it makes a real difference in how much chemical product ends up down the drain.
the details that add up:
Eco Heads sprayer attachments on every shampoo bowl — significantly less water per rinse
LED lighting throughout — every bulb, not most of them
Sustainably sourced cleaning products — floors, stations, shampoo bowls, all of it
Paperless receipts — sent by email; paper waste in daily operations is close to zero
the water, the light, the cleaning products — all of it
Sustainability at craft + theory isn't a single headline partnership. It's every decision in the building.
Our shampoo bowls are fitted with Eco Heads sprayer attachments — water-saving devices that significantly reduce water usage during every rinse without sacrificing the experience. Over the course of a day with a full team and a full schedule, that adds up.
Every lightbulb in the salon is LED. Not most of them — all of them. Lower energy consumption, longer lifespan, less waste from frequent replacements.
Every cleaning product we use throughout the salon is sustainably sourced and environmentally friendly. The floors, the stations, the shampoo bowls — nothing conventional, nothing harsh.
And we almost never print. Receipts go to guests by email. Paper waste in our day-to-day operations is close to zero. It's a small thing, but it reflects the same thinking: if there's a better option, we use it.
If there's a better option, we use it. That's the whole philosophy.
why it matters for you as a guest
You could book a hair appointment almost anywhere. If you're reading this, you're probably the kind of person who thinks about where you spend your money and what it supports.
When you sit in the chair at craft + theory, your service funds a business that:
- Recycles 95% of what it uses through Green Circle Salons
- Uses certified B Corp products with independently verified sustainability standards
- Tracks every gram of color to minimize chemical waste
- Conserves water and energy throughout the entire building
- Keeps its cleaning products clean
Sustainability here isn't a department or a campaign. It's just how the place runs.
The hair will look great. But it's also just a better way to do this.
